Burhinus oedicnemus (Stone Curlew) |
LBAP advice There are detailed RSPB/NE stone-curlew recovery projects organised by the species Lead Partner in each of the main areas for stone-curlews in England. These projects; involve direct species protection measures for stone-curlews nesting on farmland, provide advice and assistance to farmers on the habitat requirements of this species and the vital role that measures such as set aside and the Environmental Stewardship Scheme can play, carry out key research, survey and monitoring actions. In addition one key private estate organises its own stone-curlew conservation work. There is therefore no current need for LBAPs in the core range of this species to carry out species specific work for this bird. However, all LBAPs in these areas could assist the conservation of this species by encouraging the creation or restoration of areas of semi-natural habitat (principally chalk downland, Breck heathland and acid grassland). Such habitat should be short (less than 2 cm average vegetation height), with patches of bare or open ground, on free draining soils and closely grazed by sheep and/or rabbits. further information on habitat requirements for this species can be obtained from the Lead Partner. |

| Caprimulgus europaeus (Nightjar) |
Management |
|
Caprimulgus europaeus (Nightjar) |
How can I encourage Nightjars? On heathland Ensure that a good proportion of old mature heather is retained with naturally occurring small gaps, in areas that are free from disturbance. How much old heather is left will vary by site, but 10–20% of the heather at this age, and distributed around the site should provide sufficient opportunities for nesting. Where the heather is uniform and lacks gaps, uprooting two or three plants together can create one to two metre-square gaps. Cutting will have limited value, as the plants will re-grow relatively quickly. It is useful to create a number of such gaps in each area to provide a range of options for the nightjars to choose from – 100 per ha is equivalent to just 0.02%. Keep a sparse scatter of trees as song or lookout posts – this will vary according to the character of the heath, but 10 trees per hectare is acceptable. Where mature or old heather is absent or scarce, dense bracken may provide alternative nest sites early in the breeding season, but these are often lost as the bracken grows. It is important to prevent the bracken spreading. Avoid mechanised bracken control wherever nightjars might be nesting. Manage access, where possible, by providing defined paths that lead visitors away from nightjar nesting areas and by encouraging dog owners to keep their dogs on leads during the breeding season.
In forestry clearings Avoid mechanised management operations on clear-fells between May and September, when they may destroy nests. Following clear-felling, avoid rolling lop-and-top/brash – it provides shelter for nest sites. Ensure that there is a continuity of clear-fells greater than 2 ha in size. Where possible, create a waved or scalloped edge to the coup – this increases the length of foliage edge for feeding along. Wherever possible, delay restocking to prolong the openness of the clearing. Less rigorous beating-up allows gaps to develop in mature forest stands. |
