Action plan details - Shropshire Biodiversity Action Plan

Curlew

Plan status: Implementation underway

Vision statement

In the short term, maintain the current curlew population in Shropshire.
In the longer term, increase numbers of curlew in Shropshire to their early 1970s level, and increase the number of sites that hold breeding curlew.
Establish and maintain a comprehensive understanding of curlew distribution, status and ecological requirements in Shropshire through research, survey and monitoring.
Promote communication, education and awareness of the status and needs of curlew.

(Plan reviewed by Fran Lancaster, Biodiversity Support Officer, Shropshire County Council. March 2008).

Overview report

11/04/2008 Lapwing, Curlew and other wildlife in the Upper Onny Valley - Survey results and report 2007.

The Upper Onny Wildlife Group carried out a Breeding Bird Survey in 2007, concentrating on Curlew and Lapwing. It covered a total area of about 122 squared kilometres, primarily withint the parishes of Ratlinghope, Wentnor, Norbury, Myndtown, More and Lydham. Most of this area is within the Shropshire Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), and the Shropshire Hills Environmentally Sensitive Area (ESA).

A Programme of Action, to promote the conservation of Lapwing and Curlew, was also implemented with the extensive and valuable support of partner organisations.

Both Lapwing and Curlew have declined substantionally in this area in recent times, and very few breeding paird were found by the survey or during the intensive follow up work.

37 pairs of Curlew (all except 4 - 5 pairs within the AONB and ESA boundaries).

The population survives because Curlew are so long lived, and although the rate of decline is slower than that of Lawping it appears that Curlew too are heading for extinction from the Upper Onny Area in the next ten years or so, unless action is taken to protect nests and chichs from predation and accidental distruction by agricultural activities.

The Upper Clun Community Wildlife Group Report 2007.

20 - 22 pairs of curlew were found in the Upper Clun area in 2007. This is a decline but there are two 'hot spots' around Rhos Fiddle and Black Mountain where conservation work will be concentrated.

SHR CUR T02 Increase populations on these sites by 2010. Some progress (behind schedule) 24/03/2010 Survey data from BBS and other projects show:

Date No of birds % of plots
2002 50 40
2003 50 28
2004 30 30
2005 31 21
2006 22 19
2007 24 20
2008 21 22

Based on 45 - 59 plots per year.

Tthe decline of Curlew reflected in the BBS results has been found in the two areas of Shropshire where numbers have been counted recently.
