Species-rich Grassland (Neutral and Calcareous)
Plan status: Implementation underway

Vision statement
A. Safeguard existing areas of unimproved species-rich (neutral and calcareous) grassland by ensuring no further loss or degradation.
B. Improve knowledge of the distribution, extent and status of species-rich grassland in Shropshire through survey, research and monitoring.
C. Increase the extent of species-rich grassland by creation and restoration projects in areas of landscape currently supporting species-rich grassland.
D. Improve the quality of species-rich grassland through re-instating appropriate management and promoting sensitive management of adjoining land.
E. Increase awareness of the importance of species-rich grassland and attempt to generate a market for the products and ecosystem services of species-rich grassland.

Overview report
02/10/2008 Llynclys Quarry, near Oswesty, contains nearly a half of all the known area of Lowland Calcareous Grassland in Shropshire. This rare habitat requires mowing or grazing to keep it in good condition for rare plants and butterflies in particular. In 2005 a Shropshire Biodiversity Partnership project, funded by the Aggragates Levy Sustainability Fund, cleared invading scrub and fenced a 2.7 ha of this habitats at Llynclys Quarry. Tarmac Ltd, who own and manage the quarry, have now introduced grazing of this area by sheep which will provide just the long term management required to keep retain this quarry as one of the most interesting for wildlife in Shropshire. The herb-rich vegetation (including lots of wild basil) will also be of benefit to the sheep as it improves their health, much like a varied diet does for people. More >

acres of meadow were created in 2005 using MG5 sward from three Shropshire
SSSI donor sites plus some sward form Mottey Meadows for distribution around
a small area surrounding construted pool.
Subsequent management has been left to the owners but they have received some advice on good
