Targets

Code Text Status Assessment date Latest progress report
R 4.1 All significant reedbeds (those over 0.5ha) in the county under favourable management by 2003. Target not achieved 12/08/2009 The main reedbed sites are: Cotswold Water Park (SSSI and KWS), WWT Slimbridge (Upper Severn Estuary SSSI) unit 10, Purton Timber Ponds (KWS) and Frampton Pools (SSSI). Reedbed is only a fetaure of these sites as they are not designated solely for their reedbed interest.

Cotwolds water park
Unit 1 Churn Pool (2.92Ha) Unfavourable declining (Lake 8)
Unit 2 (20.04Ha) Favourable condition (Lake 12)
Unit 6 (39.06Ha) Unfavourable declining (Lake 66)
Unit 7 (2.45 ha) Unfavourable declining (Lake 102a)
Unit 8 (8.35Ha) Favourable condition (Lake 111)
Unit 9 (6.32Ha) Favourable (Lake 111b)
Unit 10 (17.45Ha) Favourable (Lake 118)
WWT Slimbridge (Upper Severn Estuary) 9Ha in favourable condition
Frampton Gravel Pits has 2 units, both in unfavourable condition. Unit one 39.92Ha and unit two 20.68Ha

Purton Timber Ponds 4Ha and its current condition assessment is unknown.

R 4.2.1 Three large (10-20ha) reedbeds in the Cotswold Water Park by 2020 (one of these to be created by 2005). Target not achieved 12/08/2009 The Cotswold Water Park did not create any 10-20Ha of reedbed by 2005. However, 8.25Ha of comprised and small units were created.

Please see below for location and sites.

Friday Island (Lake 55) 2003 onward. 2ha approx.

Lower Mill Estate, Lake 57, 2002 onwards: 1 ha approx of reed bed and lagoon created.

Lower Mill Estate, Lake 45, 2004: less than 0.25 ha of reed bed created around the central island.

Lake 75, Cerney Wick 2004. Construction of a single holiday lodge was accompanied by limitations to use of lake for water sports during the winter and accompanying habitat creation and enhancement for breeding and wintering water birds. 0.25 ha of reed created.

Horcott Lake 128, Fairford.
Hanson plc amended restoration for pit 128 to include a large reed bed with some standing open water. During spring 2004 3.75 ha of reed bed created.

Four Pillars Hotel, Lake 6, South Cerney.
Cotswold Water Park Society and Four Pillars Hotel, with Wild works Ecological Consultancy, worked to translocated 0.5ha of reedbed to create a larger, more sustainable reed bed of 1ha. Works were a great success, ensuring the small, degraded reedbed were relocated to an area more suited to reed growth.

R 4.2.2 30ha of new reedbed in the Severn Vale, preferably consisting of 2 to 3 large sites (10-20ha) by 2020 Target not achieved 12/08/2009 Not achieved as it is still ongoing. However, this target is not achievable. This target will be revised as part of the BAP review. More >
R 4.2.3 To create 10ha of smaller areas of reedbeds in suitable locations ideally forming a network of reedbed and wetland habitats in the Severn Vale by 2020 Some progress (on schedule) 18/09/2009 In 2007 Gloucestershire Wild Life Trust started Severn Vale living landscape project. This five year project will be aiming to create new reedbeds in the Severn Vale. More >
R 4.3 To increase awareness, understanding and appreciation of reedbeds. Progress unknown 18/09/2009 This target in not SMART as its imposible to know how much awareness, understanding and apreciation of reedbeds has reached the local population More >
R 4.4 To investigate the feasibility of establishing a local market for Gloucestershire reed by 2010. Some progress (behind schedule) 18/09/2009 The Severn Vale Living landscape project will be investigating the feasibility of establishing a local market for Gloucestershire reed with the help from Hartpbury College.
