B. Increase the extent of upland heathland through restoration or habitat creation.
C. Improve the condition of existing upland heathland through appropriate management.
D. Improve knowledge of the extent and status of upland heathland through survey, research and monitoring.

Targets

Code Text Status Assessment date Latest progress report
SHR UHE T01 Re-create 25 ha of upland heathland in areas where it has been lost due to agricultural improvement or afforestation by 2005, with particular emphasis on linking isolated blocks of heathland Progress unknown 04/02/2009 No report More >
SHR UHE T02 Increase dwarf-shrubs to at least 25% cover on 100 ha in areas where they have been reduced or eliminated due to inapropriate management, by 2010 Progress unknown 30/09/2008 A site visit on 30/09/2008 to the heathland creation plot on Clee Hill Quarry found heather plants doing very well with some up to 20cm in height and flowering / seeding. Cover is still not up to 25% and not likely to be so for several years but this positive result for heathland creation here could be extended to other areas of the site. More >
SHR UHE T03 Improve the condition of at least 50% of upland heathland outside SSSIs through re-introducing appropriate management (including sustainable levels of grazing), by 2005 Progress unknown 04/02/2009 No report More >
SHR UHE T04 Achieve favourable condition of all upland heathland by 2010 Some progress (on schedule) 20/11/2007 Extensive bracken control, low intensity grazing and heather cutting / burning takes place annually on Long Mynd under ESA agreement. Detailed monitoring shows that cuts and burns are regenerating well under current stock levels and bracken control is effective in the short term. Damage to heather through heavy grazing has massivley decreased and is now only restricted to a few localised areas. There is a clear improvement in the condition and structure of the heath vegetation.
